Many years back I posted something similar on MLS, to make things tolerable for dial-up connectors. Of course I haven’t done MLS in a few years but here are the basics (they are portable!).
Give the jpg file a name without spaces i.e. this_is_a_test.jpg
Keep everything in lower case and add underscore where required to make it readable. You will be amazed how much easier typing gets when everything is lower case!
Resize the picture to 600pixels maximum in width
Keep the file size to 20 - 50K (20K is better!
Preview the post to make sure it actually works
Use a webspace provider that has fast servers unless you know that you would enjoy waiting for all the stuff to load [;)][}:)][;)]
Preview once more because you didn’t see the typos the first time around
Do you recommend a place where you store pictures. I have a membership over at MLS and that’s the space I use but what about those here who don’t. Is there someplace that offers free storage?
There are places you can get free storage. Typically, you will get some storage space with your email account. Check with your ISP. I don’t know the name of free sites, but that just cause with the two following, I have plenty of space already, and feel like you get what you pay for. I never was pleased with bandwidth on free sites.
I use MLS and have a membership. I host my train specific snapshots there. But any photography quality stuff goes over to ShutterFreaks.com. The cost is reasonable, fast downloads and it’s got built in gallery software for display.
I keep my shots to max of 640 on any side, and at about 90% jpg quality. 20K is pretty small for web shots. Most of mine average between 175K to 200K. Thats a typical limit for most photo sites.
For names I use a convention used in programming. NO SPACEs. ThisIsATest.jpg bascially its title case.
I have been using Webshots and shutterfly to store still photos. Do you know if there is anywhere that short Quicktime movies can be stored? I have not noticed this option on either webshots or shutterfly. I had never heard of MLS before today what is it? A quick Google search only came up with Multiple Listing Service.
20 to 50K is plenty large enough for what we usually see in the GRR fora. There are still people who are on dial-up and they are not impressed by the quality of the 100+K 640x640 picture, since they twiddled their thumbs waiting for the download, page load, refresh and all the rest.
Even I get very irate when I see all the “crap” loading - in OPERA you can watch what’s coming from where and the excuses some webmasters try to give you why the pages are that slow, are just that: lousy excuses.
Watching all those sig files, ads and other rigamarole drift in is “real fun”!! [;)][;)][}:)][}:)]
BTW the pictures on our RhB Forum http://www.rhb-grischun.ca/phpBB2/ get automatically resized to a standard size. Want to see it in larger format, click on it.
Which convention one uses for the file name is not as important as making sure that there are no spaces! .
