$15.8 million funding agreement announced to eliminate Detroit rail bottleneck

Why is this money being spent in a state that is depopulating itself at a record rate? I was in Detroit last week. At least 50% of the place is boarded up.

Check out the Amtrak timetable and see why money is being (well) spent here. It now takes trains at least 45 minutes to go 18 miles between Royal Oak and Ann Arbor. This is due in large part to signaling which keeps trains at 15 mph restricted speed for several miles through the NS-CN junction east (south) of the Detroit station. Fortunately there was stimulus money for infrastructure and fortunately there was a state with a Republican governor willing to keep up with its future needs by looking ahead.

So, Jeffery, how are the 99% of us who still live in Michigan (our pop loss over ten years was about 1%) less deserving than the rest of the country. I don’t plan on moving from here any time soon and welcome additional improvements to the rail service here.

Thanks Jeffery, before making such statements, please do us a favor and check ridership levels and demand for Amtrak services in the state of Michigan: they are at an all time high. Maybe because doing such projects actually provide an economic benefit to places that need it? During the past 5 years, we had a tragic problem of loosing a half-million manufacturing jobs in this state alone. Yes parts of Detroit are 2nd world poor, and look awful; this is the reality of what happens. Fortunately manufacturing, and the auto industry are again doing quite well (thanks to the federal loans to the auto industry to GM, Chrysler, yes even Ford, and Nissan, and saved the remaining 1,000,000+ jobs) which factories are re-opening and hiring again. Ironically, the city and stet are pushing rail and light-rail as part of investment for the future.

Dear Mr. Guse,
I was in Chicago on the south side yesterday, and almost all the businesses were boarded up. I guess everyone has moved to Michigan on our fast trains. You are welcome, too.

Just who is our esteemed friend from Illinois who is so in place all the times to comment on the affairs of other states. This time Michigan, one governed by a Republican majority. no less. who wisely support Amtrak.

When will Amtrak take over the rest of the R.R. Kzoo.
to Town Line, does any know?
