15 Year old boy killed by Acela

Sunday a 15 year old boy detrained from a local train to meet his mother at mansfield, Mass., but somehow was hit by an Acela Express. It is not known how he came to be on the tracks when he was hit.

From the Boston Herald:

MBTA police are investigating the death of a 15-year-old Easton boy who was struck and killed yesterday by a high-speed train at a Mansfield station, where his mother was to pick him up.

Robert Castro, 15, arrived at the Mansfield commuter rail station at 1:20 p.m. on a train from Providence and was supposed to meet his mom, said Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority spokesman Joe Pesaturo.

At 1:35 p.m., Castro was struck by an Amtrak Acela Express train that was going more than 100 mph, Pesaturo said.

“This is being investigated as an accident,” Pesaturo said.

The Acela train does not stop in Mansfield. The tracks where Castro was struck can only be accessed by climbing over a fence or walking up the tracks from the platform, he said.

Passenger Monica Costello said, “The train just slammed on the brakes. It wasn’t totally uncomfortable, but it was unusual. The first announcement was, ‘We have hit some debris.’ But then, there was just a whole lot of panic going on and we were told immediately it would be two, three hours (delayed) and I felt right away that doesn’t sound right.”
