I ended up repainting a Lionel 182 Crane, with something other than the origional color. I bought it rusty, but am now unsure of the results. My next plan would be to weather it.
Here a few photos. Comments, please.
Thanks,
Kurt

Kurt, what is your goal - to restore it? To just repaint it so it isn’t rusty anymore? Something else?
The more scenery I do I lean toward the Hi-Rail end. I do enjoy the O-27 look and feel of the Lionel PW trains and cars, but I am looking for more out of my scenery and accessories. May ultimate goal is be to blend the toy and the reality.
I hope that makes sense.

The colors are “good enough” for any layout. I don’t weather my accessories because it affects their value. I do modify accessories, but not in a way that is irreversible.
Here’s my idea: search for photos of real-world cranes and get some ideas for blending it in. Most may be around docks and piers. Muse about how weathered you’d like it - apart from the frame, I’d imagine this sort of equipment is kept in fairly good shape. By the way, it looks great in the photos. You may wish to decal or uniquely color the cab if you aren’t concerned with its values. Else, using chalks or pastels can yield great results in my limited experience that can be wiped off.
I don’t know about the original or anything - I would guess that the frame works would be painted to protect the steel? I’ll look around and see if I can find some pics somewhere…
I’ve got a 182 that I repainted with a grey tower but I wonder if an all black one wouldn’t look bad. We just got home from a Chicago trip to see the Wiggles, for the kids of course, and of course as we drove into Chicago on I-90, I always pay close attention to all the railway lift bridges, bascule bridges, etc and they are pretty much all painted black these days. A 182 might look pretty good all black…
Ok , I don’t really like the dark colors on the 182…
Rustoleum American Accents Craft and Hobby Enamel 209678 Silver…something…(was covered by a price tag) $3.99 for 3 oz. Small amount of metal flake dries very fast, and has a semi-flat finish! I found it a Meijer. Closest I’ve seen to an origional color!
All of you can start breathing again…I’ll make it look origional.
