Greetings,
I just picked up a 1946 American Flyer set. It has the #300 Reading Atlantic. The underside of the locomotive has two spring loaded brass buttons. Does anyone know what these are for?
Thanks,
O-27

The only springs that I can find in my exploded diagram are the brush springs, which I would not describe as being on the underside of the locomotive. Perhaps someone has modified your locomotive.
Seth,
Those brass buttons were intended to activate a track trip that Gilbert never put into production. All 1946 locomotives have them, but they were eliminated after that year.
