I am currently rebuilding the Lionel Precision Motor [Atomic Motor] of my 1948 726 Berkshire. Reviewing the Greenburg Manual, I see that atop the brush holders are 2 screws, one each on each brush holder. What are these used for? All the photos I can locate on the internet for this unit, “which are very few”, these screws are missing.
I am new to this forum and I will post some photos once i am familiar with the process.

Reviewing the schematic one more time, I believe I miss read it. There are 2 holes atop each brush holder and no screws show on the over all picture of the motor. Therefore,… does anyone know why these are threaded??
The brush holders are metal cylinders that are threaded to attach to the motor cover and have screw slots on the ends so you can remove them. The motor brushes and springs go in these cylinders…is that what you mean?

Yes,… but on mine it does not have the slotted area to place a screw driver. Just a round hole that is threaded. I’m wondering if this type can be removed using pliers, “or” the entire brush plate cover needs to be removed to replace the brushes?
I am currently doing a “frame up restoration” on a 1948 Lionel Berkshire and I do not want to strip screws, nor break anything before I ask. Finding replacement parts is difficult and costly.

Don’t try to remove the brush holders. They are peened over on the inside of the brushplate, and attempting to remove them will destroy the brushplate. The correct way to change brushes is to unsolder the E unit wires and also the end of the field coil that is soldered to a tab on the brushplate. Then remove the two screws and pull the plate off.
