It’s confirmed Walthers’ next passenger train is the 1948 edition of the 20th Century Limited. 9passenger cars, E7 locomotives. It’s gonna cost a lot more per car than previous trains they’ve put out.

I hope the locomotives will be geared to run faster than 64 smph. The F7s they did for the Empire Builder are dog slow.

Well these are definitely one the to buy list for me. I’ll be getting the entire trains, passenger buff as I am!

Good point. Though it’s likely most of us would not do it on layouts, the “Century” sections under E7 power, regularly clocked 100 mph speeds on certain long stretches.

So where are the NYC fans posting what the proper consist of the train should be? I would guess that we will need at least two of each of those sleepers, but even then that is only 12 cars. Sounds way too short to me.

Yeah, I have a friend who’s layout is over 6 smiles long with lots of room to get a consist up to speed.

14 - 18 cars would be more typical. They did run sections as short as 10 cars at times though. I’m not to concerned though, I model B&A, the “New England States” is the train I’m a little more concerned with. All Budd stainless consist pulled be an F3 A-B-A set. Cool train.

$64…er…that’s like double the Budd cars that they first came out with

But it is a must-have series, especially the Observation cars, nice.

I did a search for: consist “20th century limited”

On the first page I found a site with 20 pages of consists–I had to “drill down” a bit, but if I can find it, you can. Sadly, there are no car name/numbers; but it’s a start.

As far as the consist goes here’s the original proposed 1948:

1 Baggage/Mail

5 10-6 Sleepers River Series (proposed) 5 4-4-2, Actual…Imperial and Bridge Series

1 Shore car (lounge…)

1 Twin-unit Dining car set*

5 12-double bedroom cars Port Series

1 Creek observation car

*No mention of these cars in the Walther’s consist. Considering the cost the train would be distinctly un-20th Century Limited.

Edit: I take that back…they do mention the 10-6 and 4-4-2 sleepers. Just not directly on the list the link points to. The twin-unit diner is a must though IMO.

The Walther’s page also includes the 22-roomette sleepers. These were not used on the original train and when they were employed they were so unsuccessful they were pulled from the train right away.

Cool. This is a logical choice for a next plastic prototypical passenger train. If I were collecting, I would get it. But I don’t have unlimited wealth and just purchased a 46-inch hi def TV!

My interests are strictly western even though I live in NYC territory. I hope to remedy that and get out of this cold freeze part of the country soon. Gratz to NYC fans!

Are you talking about the Proto 2000 F7’s that have been out since last year? Those are gorgeous! I just got my first AB set of Rio Grande last month and they are on par with Genesis but with extra prototypical details. Since mine are mountain loco’s they won’t be running fast anyway.

Yup that would be them. They might be gorgeous but they are dogs. Unfortunately I purchase 3 sets, before I realized they would be better for pulling drag freight.

I’m a Northwestern modeler, so I’m not too familiar with NYC; but doesn’t Walthers 932-9316 and 932-9318 add up to a twin-unit diner?
