I’ve been purchasing a few of the Rapido passenger cars in the Canadian National 1954 paint scheme to add to my collection in my computer room/office. I just bought one of the baggage cars and thought it would be nice to see these cars run on my layout once in awhile so I want to purchase the proper locomotive for them. I imagine they used both steam and diesel loco’s to pull these cars but which ones?
How about a nice set of F3s? Proto makes some nice ones that are also inexpensive. Dont forget the steam generator car!
Athearn Genesis makes some nice CNR units as well…but get them without sound. (MRC sucks).

The five axle C-liners would work as well, and come in the nice matching paint scheme.B units are out this year sometime as well. Also Proto FA2’s were done in the scheme thought the model is not a passenger loco detail parts could be added. Also intermountain is doing some FP’s one could be had that way as well.

One of those TrueLine Trains CN Northerns that are about to be released would certainly be a good choice. Other than brass I can’t think of any other exact model. BLI did do a run of K5a Hudsons a while ago.
CN Charlie.
Too bad the price of that unit is the same as buying a brass model…

Hi Dave
Steam was the main power almost to the end. Except for the Continental & Super Continental and a few others which used diesel. 6700’s MLW & CLC 6500’s GMD along with GP7"s & 9’s, RS10’s & 18’s were used. On rare occasions a freight diesel would show up.
BTW Dave, drop me an email re: an ONR van. Prototype that is. Your Dad has my address.

Thanks guys, now I know what to pick up. I have a CN TLT Northern on order but I might be selling it when it comes in, I already have a buyer for it. Jim, would they have used two GP7’s or 9’s or just one? My dad is in Watkins Glen camping until sometime next week so I’ll send you a PM.
Dave: if you can get your hands on one of several of Ian Wilson’s book on CN in Ontario you will see CN used a wide range of Loco’s for passenger traffic. As said before the 5Ka Hudson was for the Toronto to Windsor corridor. There was the 4-8-4’s as being released by TLT, C-Liners by TLT, Bullet Nose Betty’s as well as other Mountains. The Hudson’s were limited to the number of cars they hauled as there tractive effort was not near as good as their CP counterparts.

Depends on the train length. 1,2 or 3 Geeps. Sometimes mixed with F units or MLW or CLC units. There was one train in the morning thru Weston that used 2 GTW GP9 “torpedo boats.” 1900 GMD1’s were used on some trains in the late '50s- early 60’s before they were sent west.
Jim
Intermountain is supposed to be making FP9As in the 1954 CN passenger colours. CN used FP9As on the Super Continental from the 1950s up until the end. Check with Modeller’s Choice in Hamilton, Ontario (they have a web site). They might have them in stock.
If you can find them some MLW FA2 units could be modified into CN FPA4 units. In 1954 they would be in the olive green black & yellow colours.
Um…arnt they different lengths?
