1960's Super Chief.....

I posted this ? on the prototype section, not sure if that was the right section for this ?.

For my first HO layout, I want to get the Santa Fe Superchief locomotive and passenger cars that was used in 1963 when it ran from Los Angeles to the east coast (my grandparents took this to Pittsburg, not sure where it stopped on the way).

Any info and manufacturer that may make this would be greatly appreciated, and maybe a little more history about this would be wonderful!

I thought the Super Chief and the other ATSF all departed from Chicago’s Dearborn Street station & terminated there as well. On this home page, scroll down to “Great Passenger Trains” and CLICK on “Super Chief”.

Some thru Santa Fe cars were cut out and switched to east bound trains in Chgo. This was true with the NYC 20th century limited that then departed from Chgo’s LaSalle St Station eastbound to NY City’s Grand Central Station.

Watch your curve radius on passenger cars. It varies. from 18" to 24".

There are 15 different diesel model manufacturers out there. Some are lemons. In a nut shell it’s what’s under that shell that counts.

I suspect EMD’s E & Funits, Alco’s PA’s,may be the diesel model but I don’t own any so let the expert modelers reply.

I tried the link but got an error message. It did give me a page of info where the first entry was the correct link. So I clicked on it and it took me to the correct site. Thanks for the info. [8D]

Thanks, Jim, for bringing it to my attention. I’ve found and fixed the error. The servers don’t like the comma I placed after .com. It works now.

Your PBS station may be running a new series of train tapes. NPT here in Nashville ran one all about the Super Chief hosted by Michael Gross. Your Super Chief should be an all- Pullman sleeper train with a diner & obs lounge cars. Should be pulled by F7abba combination. Later editions were combined with hi level coach El Capitan. Check out Walthers line of passenger cars. They should have what you want. All ATSF trains terminated at Dearborn station. Most passengers detrained & were taken by taxi to the other train stations. PRR operated out of Union Station (Amtrak today) NYC operated out of LaSalle st. It used to be easier for pigs to transfer from road to road than it was for people.
