Such a different time. Head end cars, a rpo, a single coach and a waving train crew.
At 0:50 to 1:00 in the second video some PA’s can be seen in the weeds outside what appears to be a large shop building.
Thanks!
The videos illuminate just how financially precarious the railroads were in the 1960’s. The smaller the carrier, the more precarious it’s continuing existance.
I grew up near the Twin Cities mainline and my friend had the same mainline going through his backyard with a single target CTC signal we could climb on (heh-heh).
Anyways, the Milwaukee Road crews were very friendly until about 1977 when they started to turn decidedly less friendly and I suspect it was the strains of bankruptcy that soured their mood. After 1977 they became far less social and kept to themselves more.
Also, first and last time I encountered the Milwaukee Road Railroad Police was 1978…that guy was really nasty and had an attitude. Was just sitting on the very lower part of a Milwaukee Road embankment a good 60 feet from the tracks with my bike and the guy accuses me of trasspassing. Pulese, even if it was their property I was alongside a public road.
