Welcome to the forum.
Since you indicate “old”, I am thinking late '70’s, early '80’s.
The following link to a thread at MTF may be of assistance to you.

[#welcome] aboard!
I’m not sure if even Lionel has circuit diagrams for “Sound of Steam” boards at this time. Maybe someone on the Forum can point you in the right direction.
From what I’ve read here, “Sound of Steam” boards do fail after a time and there’s not much you can do when that happens. As I understand it the boards were mounted on a sponge pad that deteriorates over time and can cause the board to short-circuit through the tender frame, so take a look and make sure that no board components are touching the frame.
You may wind up replacing the board entirely and I don’t think the availability is all that good. You can order a sound system from Dallee Electronics which come as simple or elaborite as you want to go. I’ve used their E-Unit boards and they work great.
Here’s the website…
I believe Jeff at www.ttender.com has them, but I bet right now he is in York, PA for the weekend at the train show.
Jeff,
Are you sure John Wayne didn’t state, “Life’s hard, even harder if you’re stupid”?
