The fact that the guy charged was awaiting trial on two other drunk driving charges makes this case even sadder. Even his neighbours, when interviewed for the TV news, said that his driving in his own neighbourhood was a cause for concern and many wouldn’t allow their children on the sidewalks in front of their houses because of his reckless driving. Our governments in Canada are reluctant to punish criminals for fear of causing them permanent psychological damage, allowing criminals to remain citizens, while true citizens continue to die. One need look no further than our “gun laws”: the cops boast about taking guns “off the street”, but courts allow the offenders to walk, time after time. If criminals of all ilks were given punishment befitting their crimes, you would be able to literally leave guns lying in the streets, as anybody knows that guns don’t kill without someone to pull the trigger, a lesson our governments have yet to learn. The drunk driver will no doubt have someone to blame for his drinking problem, and the state will rush to his aid with counselling. Failing that, there’s always the racism card to fall back on: one that sends all levels of government scurrying to cover their butts.
