2 paint questions

Hi all,

I’m looking for paint color recommendations for 2 projects I’m working on. I’m looking for colors in spray cans.

  1. brownish/goldish color for Walthers harvest corn field kit.

  2. browns and/or grays to give a weathered wood look to Walthers stockyards kit.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Looks like you have some paint matching to do. I would take the Walthers corn field kit with me, and find something that matches, as close as you can.

Doesn’t this kit already come in either green or brown?

The wide selection of flat camouflage spray paint might work for the weathering.

There are members in here that have done the stock pens, I’m sure they will find your thread and chime in.

For question #2:

For wood, I start with a light tan and then apply various coats of Citadel Washes to get variety in the surface colors.

Build the colors up slowly and let them dry 24 hours beyween coats.

For your cornfield, visit a large paint department. Ask for some color chips, the colors of the can caps are not the same. If all you can find is gloss paint, you can always spray a coat of dull cote to give a nice flat finish.

For your stock yards fences, Light gray auto primer, either Krylon or Rustoleum will give a fine weathered wood look.

While you are looking at the auto primers, I use dark gray auto primer for steam locomotivs, tar paper roofs, truck side frames, and undercarriages. The red auto primer makes a fine box car red, and a fine brick red. I now spray trucks with red auto primer.

New to forum. Looking for color for 556 af o auge prewar engine and cars. Read post 12/26/04 from ben10ben but can’t find it again. Can you help me? Bot a repaint but have ben told it is to dark. Any help will be appreciated.

OK, I’ll jump in.

By AF556, you mean American Flyer engine #556?

If that is correct, the AF 556 is a 4-6-2 locomotive, called the Royal Blue.

Is that it?

If you go the top of this page, at the very top, in little print, on the right hand side, you’ll see Trains.com Sites.

Hold your mouse over that, and box will drop down, and click on Classic Toy Trains.

That will lead you to a forum that deals with this scale and type of trains, and more knowledgeable folks about O gauge trains.

This forum is more geared to HO and N scale.

I have used this technique to make styrene look like aged wood and the results were very very acceptable.
