I live on the Susq. line of the D&H ( Albany to Binghamton) and years ago it was a 2 track main line but that slowly went to a single track with the exception of a couple small passing siding. I was reading that CP Rail who owns the D&H wants to make several improvements to the main line system by installing more two track main lines. I was wondering if anyone has heard if they were going to make this line a 2 track main again or if that they were referring to the Canadian main lines only.[?]
Almost everything I have heard about CP’s plans involve the mainline to Vancouver, as that as where CP makes their money, and the improvements can pay for themselves. Particulary with the increase in traffic from China.
As far as the former D&H, CP has been having a hard time making those lines profitable. Your line is ABS (?) with three passing sidings in the 120 miles. That seems to be enough for a line that handles less than 20 MGT/Mi, isn’t it ? I would guess they could upgrade the ABS to CTC if capacity was a problem rather than add double track.
Do you see more CP or NS traffic on that line ?
It seems to be about the same between CP and NS. There are two regular NS train that pass a day with stacks, one in the morning between 11-12 and one in the afternoon between 2-4. As far as all traffic there is about 12-17 trains that pass a day through here. There was a Providence and Worcester coal train that pased the other day and I was told that they are going to attempt to make this a regular run through for them. As for right now it is CP, NS and lately alot of CN.
