2011 plans will do..

My 2011 plans is to PLAY WITH TRAINS! don’t get me wrong. who wants ride with me?

I never thought I’d post this, but I hope to play with MORE trains. [:P] If things work out, and BLI actually brings the 4-12-2 to market, that dream will be realized.

There is no such thing as playing too much with trains!![;). However, if the paymaster (also known as the wife) feels ignored, be prepared for trouble!![}:)]

I plan to finish the yard area of my new layout, including installing the turntable and roundhouse. With this complete, I can start having some small operating sessions to see if what I built will operate as planned.[:D]

I hope I will be able to start work on my planned layout this year, providing my financial situation improves. In any case - I never ever play with my trains, I operate my own railroad [(-D]

I spent the afternoon “playing” – trying to organize my kit shelves. Sort of like organizing a sock drawer but more interesting: none of my socks are a surprise to me, but where or why or when I got some of these kits, I have no idea whatever. Why I got kits for Western Pacific and B&O cabooses, for example – did I like the red and thought I could carefully remove the lettering and decal them for C&NW back before Walthers brought out its CNW red bay window cabooses? That has to be it.

I don’t model the modern era – how did I end up with all these TTX 89’ flat cars? I don’t even know who made the trainset quality “hi-cube” stock cars, which follow no prototype I have ever seen a photo of. I know even less why I bought three of them. Kitbashing the huge Northern Pacific pig palace car maybe? Could be.

I thought I had sworn never to buy another McKeen ACF center flo kit after the anguish involved with the first one. Where did these two unbuilt ones come from?

I must have really liked the Walthers depressed center flat car and the Accurail ACF center flo since I bought 2 of each — with the same car numbers. Ditto for Athearn’s EJ&E flat car kits: 2 with the same number. I have the sickening recollection that I even bought them both on the same day at the same swap meet.

Then there are the “this is not a kit, this is a project” – incomplete kits, battered RTR, kitbash material for forgotten purposes. I had no idea I had so much!

I used to keep these kits on three shelves: first was easy kits I knew I could just grab and finish in a night or RTR where I wanted to swap out wheels or couplers. Perfect little projects for the end of a tiring work day.

Second shelf – more challenging kits, possibly a weekend project (P2K, Red Caboose, InterMountain, etc.). Perfect for extend

I’ll ride with you! I’m starting a new shelf type, point-to-point layout. I have permission from the “Super”, (the wife), for more space than I had before, and I have a great track plan based one found on the track plan database from this web site. Happy New Year to all and, I LOVE “playing” with trains. My 2nd love, after music.

In 2011, I hope to:

  • Get as much done on the layout as possible. I am anticipating to have trackwork done and begin scenery as much as possible. I would like to have the layout as complete as possible before I move away to college in mid-2012.
  • Finally make the switch to DCC for real this time. I have a Bachmann E-Z Command, but I would like to get a Digitrax Zephyr and decoders for all my locomotives
  • Build up my rolling stock fleets, both in freight cars and pax trains
  • Have fun running trains!

This year I’d like to actually make the steel mill addition I’ve been fumbling with for the past few weeks. And of course, run loads of trains!

After two years I will finally have my area ready to start building my current plan, a 9.5x9.5 shelf layout.

BUT! This is a riding year so I don’t know how much I’ll work on it between March and October. [;)]

This year is going to bring 8 new additions to my family. The first of 8 will be my new little model railroader who will be born at the end of this month. He will finalize the score of 3 boys 0 girls. The other 7 will be additions to my MRL family with 3 new Athearn SD45, and 4 SD70ACe.

Last, I am hoping that his house that I am currently in sells so that we can move to a house that will have the room for a layout. But if that doesn’t happen then I figure on starting a 4x8 because I am getting sick of a static display with the diorama.

My plans?

1.Build Slate Creek.

2.Op till I drop.

Build my narrow gauge railroad, find a name, logo and history.

For Christmas this year, I didn’t any model railroad equipment per se, but my wife bought me a comfortable stool to run trains.

Finish the projects that I started in 2010 and got sidetracked away from, also those I started in 2009, 2008, …?? Oh boy, too many projects [swg]

I want to work on the layout as much as possible… and then play with trains.
