2018 Lionel Penn Flyer Lionchief Train problem

SO, in 2018 bought new O scale Pennsylvania Flyer Lion Chief ready to run set. Kept it stock until this Christmas. Converted to a Figure 8, added 2 switches and extra track and a extra loop and 3 cars. Now, the train won’t move unless you give it a push. When it gets going it works fine. Horn and whistle and sounds work fine also. Cleaned all the track and cars and connections with alcohol but it didn’t help. If by chance the Locomotive is broke what do I buy? A better Locomotive???

The ground wire in the tender tether connection may have broken. The wiring is very briitle and fatigues, it should have been all SuperFlex.

Does the headlamp stay off until you push?

I gave up on the original connection and went with a 3 pin JST quick-snap
connector.

Yes it does. The light is off until you give it a shove and then everything starts working. Can I fix the ground wire easily? Thanks.
