20's and 30's tenament buildings

I saw an article about 20’s and 30’s tenament buildings and detailing the backs of them. Does anyone remember which issue that was. We are working on a module and that would look very nice.

Thank you for your help.

Or you could buy a kit:

http://cgi.ebay.com/HO-Northeastern-Scale-Models-20108-Tenement-Row-/230551429353?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash=item35adefa0e9

now I hve to dig through my back issus and those at the train club and see if I can find that issue or of course buy it. We have some 3 story buildings that will be a good base for what we want to do.

Thank you,

Gloria

The April issue of “Model Railroad Hobbyist” online magazine has an article on such detailing.

I have that article and it shows the back of a resturant but not a tenament buildng.

Thanks,

There is a kit that has been produced by several manufacturers called the “Belvedaire Hotel” or somethig like that. The late Arthur Curran did a couple of books on using plastic building kits to accomplish other means. This book, if you can find it, contains a lot of good info.

An idea I had was to see if I could buy about tweoty of these kits (trying of course, to look for a price break…). Art used [it] for a variety of projects, from warehouses to factories, etc. The windows in this kit do fit the era, and so could be used as three-story walk-ups (I remember them well!). Earl Smallshaw mastered a kit for a three story kit you might want tto take a look at. Walthers also does backdrop kits.

True, but the cover photo and some others do show apartment-type structures; also, the May issue should be out shortly and is supposed to include specifics on the apartment buildings.

The article steemtrayn referenced is the one you are looking for if you want tenements. The core of the building was made from 1/16 inch illustration board with Grandt Line windows on the visible sides. The detailed portions were at the back, and the article is pretty comprehensive showing how to put it together.

I remember several and one in particular; a very good RMC article several years ago[would have to search large mag. file to find] and it showed great 50s scene. Some highlights of these scenes: lady on back porch of tenement, hanging clothes, kids and dog playing in back yard, sandbox w/ toys, rickety wood fence [ w/ slats missing, faded advertisment on it ] between yard and track, trash barrels, tons of litter, an old car up on blocks, home-made rope kids swing, w/ wood seat, hanging from large tree branch, back yard light up on pole, etc. Sure gave the feel of realism in those scenes…papasmurf

Are you talking about Earl Smallshaw’s (Middletown & Mystic Mines Railroad) article? It’s February 1989.

Thanks for the info, I was sent a opy of Earl Smallshaws aricle and it was just what I was looking for thanks for all the help.

The Earl Smallshaw model is available as a kit.

A smaller, lower cost alternative kit would be the Walthers Parkview Terrace kit:
