20th Cen Steel Water Tanks

I am building the Tichy Steel Water Tank and have a choice between a rounded elliptical top or a shallow cone type. My layout is based in the upper midwest and in researching these tanks, I have not come across anything to explain why the cone-type tops of these tanks were more prevalent in the western US (Minnesota to Washington and south into Texas and the desert southwest states.

Does anyone have any info on these tanks or could point me towards further info?

(before I stop fussing and glue one or the other to the assembly)

Thanks,

Cedarwoodron

Two things come to mind. The ability to shed snow and/or being more wind resistant in windy areas. These two factors and maybe others may determine roof style.

I wonder if it’s less an issue of “where” but rather “when”?? The pointed-top water tanks seem to be older ones (like 1920’s era), with more recently built tanks (postwar years) having the flatter top.

Good point. Materials used and construction techniques change. And you know Engineers they love to change things.[I]
