I have a Track Check Gauge drawing based on NMRA Standards Gauge at:
http://www.55n3.org/civil_war/check_gauge.pdf
It is for Standard Gauge of .991 inches. I will be following with an article on making a gauge.
Thank you if you visit

An interesting project, I’m sure, but have you considered that at the time of the Civil War, there really was no “standard” track gauge? It varied all over the map, from the Erie’s 6-foot gauge to the Western & Atlantic’s (of “General” fame) 5-foot gauge to a bunch or random track widths all over the country. The gauge you indicate, in your scale (5.5mm/foot) comes out to a track gauge of 54.92" - approx. 4’7". Odd, don’t you think? A “standard” 56.5" track gauge at 55mm/foot would be 1.092"
I am modeling narrow gauge at 5.5mm/ft(1:55), the narrow gauge uses that scale to utilize HO track.
My Civil War project is 1:57 scale to accommodate the 28mm figures. The best 28mm Civil War soldiers scale out to that. I am not worried about the measurement of a foot. Visit:

I have a Scale "ruler:

Neither project is connected.
