350 pixels wide?!

To the Trains.com forum webmaster,

Re: resizing images in the forums.

350 pixels wide??? come on…thats ridiculous! [V] [;)]

I understand you dont want giant photos posted in the threads, so that people have to scroll side-to-side, so I understand the need and desire for some forum software that will automatically re-size photos over a certain limit. and im in favor of that! [:)]

But I would like to respectfully suggest that the current 350 pixel re-size setting is WAYYYYY smaller than necessary!

How about considering changing that 350 to 550? Then any photo under 550 pixels wide will not be resized, and any over 550 pixels wide will still be resized, same as now…550 is big enough that we can see some detail in the photos, but small enough that they will fit nicely on everyone’s monitor with no horizontal scrolling.

the way the forum is set up now, there is room to stretch the limit out to 550 without stretching the existing window/table at all! the forum will be no wider than it is now, but 550 pixel wide images will fit into the existing space just fine…

like thus:

please consider this! [:D]

I believe it would make the forums more enjoyable for all…and it has absolutely no drawbacks.

thanks,

Scot

Scott,

Are you saying that when you click on the image to make it bigger, it’s not quite big enough?

No, thats not what im talking about…when I click on the image, it opens full-size, thats not the issue at all.

what im talking about is the image that appears in the thread…the one that you click on…there is no reason for it to only be 350 pixels wide…that is much smaller than what is necessary. The forum could be changed so that its 550 pixels instead of 350…then any photo at 550 or smaller will show up full-size in the thread, and you wont need to click on it to see it full size, because it will already be full size…only images larger than 550 will be scrunched.

350 is just unnecessarily small…there is no reason for that particular size, and it makes photos look bad by compressing them down.

550 pixels will fit in the space that is already there…

testing:

that image is only 200 pixels wide…which is smaller than the 350 “auto resize” limit…so it shows up full-size in the thread…there is no option to “click on it to view full-size” because its already full-size in the thread! Any image 350 pixels wide or smaller will show up full-size…

any image larger than 350 pixels is automatically re-sized and scrunched down to 350, with the “click to view full-size” option…im merely suggesting changing the “auto resize” limit from 350 to 550 pixels…

I don’t really have a problem with this, since you can click on it to enlarge it - What I have problems with are forums with ridiculous rules like “Images can not exceed 300x200 pixels in size”

Space is money…

Yes, space is money.

Space in pictures is filled with pixels and somebody (Kalmbach) has to pay for every pixel sent from the site.

To increase the size of the picture on the thread from 350 to 550 pixels across, would require 2.46 times as many pixels.

350 pixels is good enough to determine if you want to look at the large version.

Come on, Kalmbach is providing this service at some cost to them!

Indeed!

Also consider the usability of larger images for those folks that are still on dial-up internet service. With the smaller images, those folk’s download time is relevant. This way, they can download the thread is a reasonably decent time, and if the image is important to them, they can click on it and wait for the larger image to load. This way, everybody wins!

[#ditto]

Even for those of us on faster connections some of these threads get heavy enough to slow down considerably. Keeping pictures to a minimum is courtsey we all can enjoy.

Enjoy

Paul

I agree that the current setup is a good way to go.

I’m much more likely to look at a post and your photos if they load quickly, and I can see a small verison of each one. Looking at a few lines of 7 or 8 photos while waiting for the rest to load is a good way to get me to not look at them at all. I know that when you post it, you want people to look at it, and sometimes concessions have to be made to make it happen. At least when you click it does go to the full-size image. They don’t cut it down to JUST the small image. That I’d have a problem with.
