3x5 N Scale Power Pack???

Hi everybody

Will this power pack work for a 3x5 N scale layout in australia.I dont understand all the electrical mumbo jumbo!!![V]

This is a Model train transformer. It is in near new condition, never been used. Has 120VAC input. has a output of 0 → 18VDC for track rail & 20VAC for accessories. also has a directional switch to change the direction of the train

I don’t know about the australian electricity network but if you can supply the power pack with the proper input current(VAC/cycles combo),this pack will give you more than enough current to run one train,even with a few extra locos.I’d say you won’t need any more for a 3X5 layout.The “train” output will be fine,it’s the supply you’ll have to verify.In doubt,you could call your power company and ask to talk to one of their technicians.

Isn’t Australian electrical mains power 220 Volts at 50 Cycles? If it is, that power pack won’t work because it is made for use in the USofA. You’d need another step-down transformer to plug it into that reduces the input voltage from 220 to 110.

Just curious… can you really judge the adequacy of a power supply without knowing the amps delivered?

G’day, if you buy a 240V to 110V transformer (Check at *** Smiths) you could use this powerpack but you would probably do just as well buying a new 1 from your local hobby store or get a kit for one from Jaycar Electronics.[:)]

From what you are typing, it appears that you have a ‘train-set’ power pack. These are allright to start , but you should upgrade the power pack at your earliest convenience.

You will really notice a difference in locomotive performance when you get the better pack.

IF you can get MRC power packs in Australia, those are my favourites. I like the TECH-2 2400 the best. It has an ‘On-Off’ pulse switch, which I like. Others like other packs manufactured by this firm, but it is widely (almost universally) agreed that these are the best DC packs that there are.

Bachmann offers a SPECTRUM power pack. I have never owned it, but I used to go to a FLHS (until it closed) that used one for its test track. It was pretty good.

Kato has just announced a power pack in the USA. I do not know if they already or intend to market it in Australia. I saw a display model at the Springfield, Massachusetts show, which is one of the largest shows in the US. The Kato representatives were glad to answer my questions which were motivated more by curiosity that an intent to buy one. It has a speed control, an ‘On-Off’ switch, a pilot light and a brake switch. The Kato people told me that it was straight DC–no pulse. I would expect that it would be a good pack as I would expect that anything from the Kato would be at least good, at best excellent.

There are other manufacturers out there, but I have little or no experience with or knowledge of them.

I would check the MRC power pack, they are the best!!! Take my word for it, I had mine since 2002 with not a once of trouble
