This site has a lot of different plans, not too many 3’x4’ though. but worth a look anyhow.

If you’re willing to stick the 1x4 section on sideways (assuming you have a 2x8 or 4x6 space) you can turn the extra section into a yard or large industry area, or a simple branch line. This would allow you to keep your current 2x4 pike relatively intact (assuming that you want to) other than adding a switch or two. By adding two switches you could add a wye, allowing you to run out and back to the addition or turn around your trains.

sorry, in my title it should be 3x4 layouts instead of 3x8 i have a sold 3x4 layout and im just looking for some track ideas, also, how can i go about making my train climb a hill or make hills on my layout, the easyest way?

Tim,

Try this website that has a lot of trackplans for small areas. Some as small as 2x4. Even if you don’t find exactly what you’re looking for you will at least get some good ideas.

Making hills. There are all kinds of opinions on this, but in my mind, especially for an area as small as you are talking about, get some foam insulation (the blue or pink board stuff that is sold at Home depot or Lowes). You can cut pieces, stack them up to get the elevation you want. They are easy to shape with either a serated knife, a surform tool (kind of a rasp), or one of those hot wire foam cutters. You can glue them together, and to the base of your layout, using different glues. I used Liquid Nails for Projects. Be sure whatever glue you use is ‘safe for foam’. Some glues will attack foam.

Here are six small shots of a photo diorama I did using foam for the hills, and covering it with ground foam ground cover.

Easiest way of elevating track to go up and over is probably using the Woodlands Scenic system of flexible foam ramps and risers. Check them out at your local hobby shop, or go to www.woodlandscenics.com

Hope this was what you were looking for.
