4-4-0 Tender ?

I was wondering what the chains hanging off the side of the tender along the wheels were for? Thanks

Some chains were used to chain cars together or on another track to pull them if something was derailed or a drawbar was pulled out or just to move a car on an adjacent track.

If the chains are from the corners of the trucks to teh tender boddy, they keept he trucks under the tender if it derails or is picked up.

SP had passenger assigned locomotives equipped with stout chains to be attached to the leading car as insurance against accidental uncoupling, which brings up an interesting question: where did SP stow these chains when not in use?
