4014 moving model

Hello,

After watching the pictures and videos of the 4014 locomotive moving I was thinking it would be nice to recreate it in a Ho layout. From my side, the problem is, I only own the 4014 model loco :frowning:

If I wanted to re-create the whole 4014 moving train, with the 2 diesel locomotives and the extra cars, what models shall I look for?

Thanks in advance!

can you link to the videos etc,so we know what you are referring to?

The two diesel locomotives were SD70Ms, numbered 4014 and 4884.

4014 has flat radiators, 4884 has flared radiators.

Athearn announced in January that they were releasing flared radiator SD70Ms,

although not in that road number, though I suspect that they will soon… Otherwise, you can just change the number.

You could probably alter another into a flat radiator version as well, and renumber it 4014.

The passenger cars appear to be two baggage cars and a baggage-RPO, although modified. Your best bet is

Walthers for these. Other cars are two box cars and seven flat cars.

The 2 box cars are normally assigned to rotary snowplow service, they contain tools and parts and began life as express box cars.

With the exception of the 1st baggage car, there are no commerical models available to my knowledge.

Since you have already seen the videos you are probably aware that you will have to modify UPP* 4014 to move it dead in train.

The articulated steam pipes from the bottom of the smokebox to the front cylinders are on top of the tender cistern.

Both engines have had their piston rods and packing glands removed.

The valve linkages forward of the Walschaerts link have been removed. (The eccentric rods are still in place because they drive the mechanical lubricators.) Likewise, the piston valve rods and packing glands are absent.

To be perfectly prototypical, you should remove the worm gears and deactivate the motor, possibly by pulling the decoder if it’s a plug-in type. As it is now, the Big Boy only moves if something else pulls or pushes. Still, it IS a valid reason to have big steam moving on a contemporary layout.

*Why UPP 4014? Union Pacific decided that it was easier to add a second ‘P’ to the Big Boy’s official reporting marks than to re-number that lead diesel.
