50#39; HO Mail car, celestory roof, made in Brazil?

quite a nice model. Possibly a shake the box kit. Probably undecorated or redecorated with a slightly imaginative early 20th century CPR colour of boxcar brown with grey doors.

What impressed me was the detail of the truck frame, Talgo type trucks with a weird coupler box. Very nice free running 36" metal wheels in a dark bronze colour.

Kadee #5 fitted but I put #148 in immediately. Needs a short shank coupler but I don’t have any in stock right at the moment.

The coupler is retained by a plastic pin (far too small in diameter) at the end of a plastic arm moulded into the truck coupler box. You pry up the arm with the pin in order to slide the coupler in and the arm springs back to capture the coupler. Pry down relative to the car of course, up working upside down. Pretty loosey goosey

Anyone know who made stuff in Brazil?

Frateschi:

Ed

Frateschi is a famous maker in Brazil; only one year younger than I am.

I was going to kitbash one of their V8 electrics into a New Haven streamlined motor… but the underframe is radically different.

The coaches are fairly similar to those offered by Model Die Casting…

You could kitbash a “Little Joe” with one of their V8 Russas Paulista motors:

Five “Little Joes” went to Brazil in the early '70s.

Thanks as usual. Amazing well of knowledge. Plenty of founts also. Although I learned the homily as fonts of knowledge.

It did catch my eye, being CPR is unusual enough. The lettering represents gold leaf and looks a bit weathered which is nice. The one roof clip is broken and the one side wedge clip is also broken. Reversing the roof clips it in place even though the clips are offset, I.e. not centered.

One of the end railings has gone awol. Looks like Walthers goo isn’t foolproof. The railing plastic is incompatible with the styrene, ordinary solvent cement doesn’t work. They are a press fit originally. Still, I’m gaining some experience with brass and phosphor bronze wire what with building an ancient stock car kit (phospor bronze door tracks, bend 'em yourself) and a Walthers F7 dress up kit from which I’m “borrowing” the handrails for an Intermountain F7B kit I’m building and painting to match the BB F7A I finally decorated (Long story shirt version, I bought an early Genesis F7A painted by Athearn with incorrect “CPR” Tuscan Red and I’m swapping the shell off for this Intermountain kit, why Athearn bothered is a mystery since CPR didn’t buy a single F7A anyway but that Genesis drive is the BB drive with brass flywheels, same gearing and same noises so a match for my older BB F7A). Once I get my Athearn Kit Train master shell painted I’ll be gaining extra wire fabricating skills when I install the factory included wire stanchions and railings on that. End rails for a little passenger car should be easy stuff after all that,

I repainted the roof a darker grey to represent the weathered black look, possibly not dark enough gray.

I’ll fit short shank couplers and see how it tracks.

Now to find the rest of the train.

That sounds like a good project. Can we see some pictures?

Well, couplers, a lick of paint and a wire end rail aren’t much of a project but it keeps me amused.

The car looks exactly like the one in the boxed set pictured above.

Many people, including myself, have shared pictures of lesser projects. All shares are appreciated.

I do believe when you stop trying to argue about everything and just share the hobby you enjoy, through pictures of projects (big & small), you will find enjoyment and leave your unwelcome and worn-out quarrelsome behaviour behind.

That will be a better day for everyone.

I am acquiring roughly three collections.

Model railroad level quality, new and used, to run as models. Rapido’s Canadian ten car consist with FP9 ABA locomotives and the Royal Hudson (of course), Rivarossi heavyweight 8 car consist (for the Royal Hudson), Kumata (Van Hobbies/ PFM) five car brass consist nicely decorated (for the Rapido Ten Wheeler when it arrives) , several Rapido, Genesis, Atlas, BLI and Spectrum models with rolling stock from various makers.

Toy train or slightly better stuff, new and used, to encourage my grandchildren into the hobby. Stuff that isn’t junk but not valuable so if it hits the floor or gets grabbed incorrectly, (which I’m slowly learning how not to do, myself) it doesn’t matter. No tears on my railroad.

Then perhaps the most interesting: old stuff. This category just has to be interesting and usually not valuable and I’m interested in buying and running it.

In a way it is a little heartbreaking to see how many like new kits and unused factory finished models there are out there. Lucky for me but likely a sad story in each case of unfinished business or disappointed or unfulfilled dreams. So I buy those and finish the kits or run the like new locomotives as if I was the original buyer excited with the new acquistion.

I don’t want to leave any unfinished kits, repairs or like new models behind in my collection when I’m done this hobby. I wasted enough time getting started.

An olive branch? Thanks for that.

I think…

I bought four of these when I returned to the hobby about 15 years ago. They are 48 scale feet long (vs. 60 feet of the Roundhouse model). At the time, it was sold under the Model Power brand. Like Mike, I also repainted the roof (grimy black if memory serves). I also did some weathering - although I’m not sure it improved the look that much [:)]. I also removed the couplers from the trucks and installed some on the underframe. I painted the seats. They run fine.

I think they are a good match for my CP 4-4-0. My Roundhouse cars will look better with the Pacific I purchased recently. That one is in the paintshop right now, I will post it on WPF next week…

I picked up a Roundhouse 50’ business car today. Assembled kit. Not well painted but thankfully not decalled. Windows are installed so a big masking job coming up in order to paint it CPR “brown”. Forgot to pick up the decal set, darn.
