I make it a habit to take apart all used engines I buy (the only ones I buy) and clean it all up and renew all lubrication. Just take the thing completely apart , clean the commuter with an eraser, clean out the brush holder, and re grease. On the 50, besure to clean the contacts on the reversing bumper switch and remove old grease and renew.

Many of these motors have been sitting up for years and all the lub has dried out. Use synthetic motor oil which will not dry out and Red and Tacky No. 2 grease from Napa auto store.

Be sure to scrape the wheels and the pickup roller with a knife to get them very clean. I have found my 50 gang cars to be my best sparkers and the ozone really gets generated. Ah, what a smell and I am helping the hole in the ozone over the north pole!!

Now start watching for another 50 gang car or a hand car with reversing bumpers from MTH to buy. It is a blast to operate two on one track or loop. Who needs $1000 command control locos when this much fun can be had for less that $30.

Thanks,
I’m on the way to Napa after work.

You may want to get an exploded diagram of the car also.

Most noise comes from the gears.

Use the grease sparingly on the gears only.
A drop of oil on axle points & top armature shaft.
Clean brush holders with a Q tip dipped in denatured alcohol.
Before reassembly check the fiber ‘plug’ in the center tower of the Body / Brush holder, were the armature shaft goes.
Replace if gummed up.
Reassemble then add a drop of oil in the center hole.

Hope this helps

Thanks,.
Put the grease on and ceaned everything, works like a charm.

one of my favorite items. If I had 'em, I would have several criss crossing industrial areas, but alas, I have only one.

I would like to find a post war handcar though, I have a plan in mind for one.

#50 gang cars, #60 trolley and MTH hand cars that all have bumpers to reverse direction are a hoot to run with a track block to reverse them or with two or three on the same loop. The crashes result in reversing and more fun. I like to run them on my oval and figure 8 section which gives lots of switching.
