50 Ways to a better looking layout
MR needs to do a MUCH better job of explicitly identifying–in its book announcements, promotions, and descriptions–when a book has all-new material, vs. having the content be a collection of a “few”, “some”, “most”, or “all” previously published MR articles.
I’ve read MR since 1953 and ran out of shelf space long ago, so I cut up my magazines and file the articles by topic. I am irritated when I buy a Kalmbach softcover book only to find it is merely a compilation of past MR articles.
Don’t misunderstand: there are 34 Kalmbach softcover books on my shelf; Jeff Wilson is one of my favorite authors; the “50 Ways…” book is probably excellent. I’m merely asking for truth-in-advertising as we move forward and as MR increasingly re-packages and unbundles stuff (e.g., the Great Model Railroads stories that used to appear in MR itself).
(I haven’t seen this book; my 2-star rating only calls attention to one of the few rough spots from my 60 fun years with MR.)
The book for me was well worth the cost. Great Photos and easy explainations. Yes, some I have seen before, but seeing them again only helps to remind us about the ideas we wanted to try and then forgot about.
