6455 Sunoco Tank?

Hello All,

I have what appears to be a common 6465 Silver Sunoco tank, bar end trucks, frame without steps, printed logo and info on tank; but, the bottom of the frame is clearly marked 6455 in silver ink. I see no references to a 6455 postwar tanker. Any thoughts? Thank you!

I have several of these, I rounded up 3, but swear that I have more, the others must be hiding somewhere. 2 of mine have the # painted on the bottom of the frame, 1 has the # printed on the side of the car, below the test date info. I have never tried to find these in any referrence book, so I can’t help there, but they do show up on ebay quite often. These are some of the only multi-dome tank cars that I like, I can’t say what makes them different, but I do like them and will buy them when ever the price is right on them. They definitely do not appear to be hard to find. I believe that they were made in 1956, but I can’t say that for sure, or that was the only year that they were produced

Actually, this is common. Some versions of the type 2e 6465 tank car frames were stamped 6455. Straight from Greenbergs guide to lionel trains 1945-1969. Probably has magnetic couplers too, does it not?

Thanks, Doug, for your quick response. Dave

Right you are, Trainrat! Geeeze…I’ve been collecting for 20+ years, and didn’t notice that. Actually, I am constantly learning! That’s what makes this hobby fun. I appreciate the help!

Your Welcome Dave.

Hi trainrat,

Mine have a squarish plate under the truck that curves up under the coupler to drop the coupler pin, rather than the “Thumb Tack” magnetic uncoupler, is that what you are referring to?

Yes, thats correct. There are also the coil couplers which are activated by the “flying shoe” on the bottom on the truck and there is copper wire wound around behind the coupler. But the coil couplers are mainly from about 1948 and earlier. The magnetic couplers came along late 1949 early 1950. The thumb tacks came along around mid 1950’s I believe.

An interesting note about tank car frames- there were 8 different frame styles used with the Sunoco tank cars. They have various holes and cutouts, along with steps and no steps.
