I recently bought a 6517 BW caboose from a seller on eBay. The seller didn’t list that it was missing light socket. My postwar repair book (from Kline) doesn’t have a diagram for the 6517, and the parts dealer I deal with doesn’t have a socket for a 6517 listed.
Can anyone help me with a part number for this. I’d really like to get a light in this caboose. I’m thinking it uses the same socket assembly as the 6417, but am not sure.

HMMMM? I’ve gone through my books and can’t find a diagram for this car either. The closest I came was with Greenberg’s modern era diagrams and parts lists, which lists the 6417-11 lamp socket as an alternate to the modern light socket (9269-30). I believe the 6417-11 is the one you are looking for, but I would think about any light socket would work.
Thanks for the reply. I assume the diagram you were looking at is for an MPC BW caboose. I have a newer one, but it lookedlike it was riveted to a tab that doesn’t appear to be present on the PW 6517. (I’ll admit, I didn’t take either caboose apart yet)
It does sound like my hunch about the 6417 socket being the part I need though. I’m gladI didn’t place my parts order last week like I intended to.

Yes, It was an MPC book. You now have me worried about the bracket for the socket assembly. I have one bay window caboose ( Lionel Santa Fe from the 1979 FARR set), that has a sheetmetal frame in which the frame was “pressed” in to make the mounting tab for the socket. This engine uses the 9269-30 bracket, which includes the rectangular recepticle and spring clip to hold it in place. I also have2 bw caboose’s made after the mpc era with a detailed plastic chassis, which uses a different mounting bracket. I have no reference material for items built after the LTI era. I believe the FARR series caboose was built off the postwar tooling, and still think the 6417-11 light socket will work for you. Turn your 6517 upside down and see if there is a mounting tab for the clip on the 6417-11 socket assembly. If there is and you can’t find one, I have a reasonable substitute that you can have which will require no modification.
