I just purchased a smoking caboose recently and was trying to figure out how to remove the caboose from its chasis. The smoke deflector thats located on the top of the smoke stack seems to not want to budge. The smoke unit works great, but the light seems to short out whenever it starts to move. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

John, here’s the link for the Lionel service info on the 6557:

Unlike the Greenberg book, operating instructions are not included at this site. Here’s what they say: “The caboose lamp is part of the smoke generator circuit and must be on. If it is missing, broken or burned out no smoke can be produced. To reach the lamp take out the two screws in the ends of the caboose, remove the smoke deflector by springing it out and lift off the caboose body.”
If the light shorts out only when the caboose is moving, the mostly likely location of the short would be the roller wire, so you might not have to remove the body, anyway.
Chris-
Thanks a lot for the info

John,
Sounds like the roller wheels are shorting out. Have you cleaned the regular wheels of the caboose? Maybe your track is dirty, try these before repairing the caboose.
