Hello to all. I have a question for postwar operators. I recently
added 8 new lionel 072 switches to my layout. Just about all of my
trains run through the switches fine (new,postwar,prewar). The
problem trains are 671,681,682. The 671,681 tend to derail the most
often when passing through the switches. Only when going against the
switch not through the turn out. The main wheels tend to bind on the
outside rail when the wheels are being transferred from the swivel
rail to the outside. This may be common with this wheel
configuration. If anyone has any input it would be greatly
appreciated.

Check the gauge of the wheels with a caliper, if available.
Then compare to a simular engine that does not derail.
Adjust if nessasary.

take the caliper and check the following dimensions:
switch track—outer dimensions of rail to rail
inner dimensions of rail to raill
engine—outer dimensions of each wheel to wheel
inner dimensions of each wheel to wheel
if the dimensions between the switch and the wheel do not match up-that is your problem-i had two new mth engines that the front truck would derail on gargaraves switches because the deminisions did not correspond to one other so i moved the front truck wheels outwards by 5 mms-no problem afterwards
other suggestions is to pu***he engine by hand very slowly and at slight angle turned upwards away from yourself to review where the binding is happening
take the front truck of a engine off and place it on the switch track and push it thru slowly good luck
