671 from 1952

I’m having a problem with my 671 turbine that I can’t seem to fix permanently. The pickup keeps shorting out. I take it off, inspect it to see what is going on and then it seems to work again for a few hours then a total dead short. Its getting frustrating. Everything looks good. The two small plastic bushings are still there where the screw holes are. Suggestions?

I’d check the wire leading up to the e-unit, especially at any point where it seems to rub against anything, or where it’s bent into any sharp turn. A spot where the insulation is abraded or cracked can cause a short, even if it’s really small and hard to find – it may take careful examination. The fact that it’s OK for a while, but then the problem returns suggests that when you remove the pickup, you shift the “bad” spot a bit during reassembly; but then it works its way back to the original position or orientation with a few hours of running.

Hello Aurora!

Sounds like you may have a short in the Pickup Wire even though you may not be able to see it or it may even be one of the E-Unit Wires touching the Frame or the inside of the Cab. Also, check the Insulator beneath the Pick-up Assembly for any Cracks/Chips. Take apart the engine & check all of the wiring. Usually, a problem like this is very simple to overlook. Take Care & let us know what happens.

Thanks guys for your response! I did what you both said and found a couple of potential culprits. The wire leading to the headlight was bare in a tiny spot that could have been touching the shell. Taped it. And also put a piece of tape around the solder lug on the E-unit. Those seemed to have solved it. So maybe it wasn’t a pickup problem after all.

Thanks

had the same trouble with mine a few years ago. it was the wire.
