I like them both, the 671 for nickel rims, and the 681 for magnetraction
I like my 681 because of it’s magnetraction and pulling power… But if I had to prefer one it would be the 682 because of the drive rod linkage and magnetraction…
The 681, for magnetraction and 12-wheel tender. Definitely not the 682, with its (I think unprototypical) white stripe and grossly exaggerated and clumsily implemented oiler linkage.
White stripes and over sized parts didn’t bother us kids in the 40s and 50s. I still go with either the 681/682.
Most 681s came with the 2046W-50 as with mine 1951 & 53 and they are not a 12-wheel tender. This locomotive, the 1950 681 usually came with No. 2671 12 wheel tender. So it can have either tender. The 2671 12-wheel tender came with the 671 variations D through F earlier ones had the 671W tender.
For a loco that never made it to the big time or true production I don’t think “un-prototypical” can be applied.
If it had at least one prototype, it can be unprototypical.
If you please, but like SJ when I was a kid playing with Toy Trains, the more stuff that moved on them the better I liked it. Prototypical or not. At least we can aggree on the stump pulling power of the 681. [;)]
I’ve got a '49 671 and a '50 681. I prefer the 671 because the 671M-1 motor seems to run much smoother than the 681-100 used in the Turbines and Berks (681 and 736) from 1950 onward. I’ve had several 671M-1 and 681-100 on the bench, and the 671M-1 is always the winner.
Although the 681 does have Magnetraction, a weighted 1947-49 671 isn’t a weak puller by any means. I used to be a diehard Magnetraction fan until I played with some steamers made before Magnetraction. They run so much smoother for me than their Magnetraction equipped counterparts.
My 671 is on the layout, and my 681 has been living on a shelf ever since I got the 671.
