Had a very good 7.2 quake quite close to the sunset route of the UP. Have not heard of any reduction of service but it may be to soon. Very close to El Centro, just south of the Salton Sea in So. CA.
The 7.2 quake was actually 110 miles souteast of Tijuana, Mexico. There was a 5.1 aftershock near Palm Desert California. This is from the USGS (US Geological Service).
Palm Desert is on the sunset route, some damage in Yuma, AZ. which is also on the main. My guess is traffic is halted for inspection. I live in Riverside Co., CA and definitly felt this one! Some damage reported in Needles, CA where the BNSF crosses into AZ.
Big one is coming to LAX soon, Because in June I am going to Las Vegas, NV on the Southwest Chief and in Sept my family is going on $7,000 Cruise from LAX.
The shaking was very noticeable here in Cardiff (about 15 miles north of Downtown San Diego) - felt like we were moving back and forth at least a couple of inches. The SD Union reported minor damage to a few building in San Diego, worst being a broken water line.
Considering that Yuma is a whole lot closer to the epicenter than San Diego, inspecting the Sunset Route in that area makes a lot of sense and most likely standard operating procedure.
I checked the USGS web site a few minutes after the quake and was very intrigued by some of the strong (M 4+) foreshocks.
Sunset limited left LAX about 1:30 late for whatever reason (EQ ?) just after the reported time of Quake. It is loosing more time east bound. 32 miles to Pomona Took 1:30; 6 more miles to Ontario took :25; 68 miles to Palm springs not there yet ( over 3 hrs late already). will update this tomorrow morning Expect these delays will increase until train gets to Tuscon due to required track inspections.
The Sunset Limited finally arrived in Palm Springs at 9:45 pm, 4:39 late. It took them 4:28 to travel the 67 miles from Ontario to Palm Springs; average speed = 14.35 mph.
With the necessary track inspections I imagine the UP sunset route is going to get completely plugged. will try to update Sunset Limited progress.

Just had a 5.0 after shock near El Centro at 640 pdt , reinspection will be needed again I’ll bet!

The question that comes up is what magnitude of after shock warrants a reinspectation of the rails? We are having them every hour and a number 4+ and the experts [Cal Tech] indicates they will last for more than a year.
What may make things even more interesting is that the epicenter of last Sunday’s earthquake was very close to a dormant volcano…
Anyone hurt?
2 killed in Mexico, a number of minor injuries…
