70's BN Question

When did the Burlington Northern start painting the top of the short hood on their diesels black?

Black hood

Maybe the question should be, “did BN really paint the short nose hoods black??” This wouldn’t be the first time a model rr manufacturer made a mistake on a diesel paint scheme. Certainly looks like the Colorado & Southern lead unit doesn’t have a black panel on top of the short hood in the pic you put in a link to. Could be they originally used green and added the black panels in the eighties…at least, sometime before they added the orange in the nineties.

I’m guessing that the black on the short hood was some type of anti-glare solution. I have found a photo of a U30C taken in 1980 that had the black short hood. There are many photos of green short hood units all the way into the early 90’s.

Actually, I belive it was grip tape stuff,so when crewmembers were working on stuff, they would not slip.

Makes sense being some type of no slip product. Any idea when they started using the stuff?
