844 Pilot question

What is the use of those shiny silver flaps on each side of the pilot?

Got a photo that shows them?

[]

I was at railpictures.net looking at Pict’s of 844, noticing an interesting trend, these “flaps” are only in use while the engine is parked. Then I noticed what they are covering. They are there to prevent morons from climbing on the pilot.

I should think more, post less… []

That may be what those are, but they sure don’t appear to be “moron” proof!

Nothing can be truly “moron proof” because morons are so ingenious.

Got another 844 question, how many miles do you think 844 has under her belt(Ballpark Estimate)?
