I only wish I could afford things like that. OMI sure makes some nice stuff…

The shipping is reasonable.

David B

Jeez that looks good! Wish I could afford it![:(]

$3550.00 for a brass engine??? Some one is either drunk or OUT OF THEIR MIND!!!.

Thanks Darth, but I already have 2 of them. And the price is about fair for those things. I wouldn’t be supprised to see it close to $4000.00. Even though my wife is great about my RR stuff a 3rd would be out of the question. If you want I can ship one to you. Play around with it on your layout for awhile. Unless you have seen one of these up close you won’t believe it. The detail on the Turbine unit is unbelieveable.

David,

Yes the shipping for something like that is really reasonable.

igoldberg ,

You must not follow the brass marke t for OMI brass because that price is really fair for something like that.

Mike

Wow, you already have two? You must be rich.[^] What kind of a radius do those things take?

You don’t have to ship one to me (but thanks for the offer). I’ve seen OMI brass at train shows before (not the turbines), and if it weren’t for the size of my wallet, I’d get one in a heartbeat.[:D] I was lucky enough to get a Westside PRR 4-4-0 at a train show (seller knocked off $100 for me [:D]), so I do have some brass to play with.[:D]

Darth,

Anytime you want to play with one just give me a hollar. Don’t forget, OMI made two differant types of loco’s. They made what they called “RUNNERS” and the other one was called “SHOWCASERS”. The runners were the ones that were made to be ran, they has LESS detail then the others. The “SHOWCASERS” were the ones that ran ok, but mainly were made to be displayed. They are the ones that had the huge amount of detail. Even if you changed motors that didn’t matter, they had SO MUCH detail that it created problems for people who wanted to run them A LOT. Remember that “Diamons Series” UP Challenger I bought with the two Turbine Water tenders? I posted several times to see why it wouldn’t run around curves. Well it seems that it was made to be “SHOWCASED”. After talking with brian and countless HRS. in the club layout we had to file small amounts of brass from several steam pipes, hoses, and wheels to keep everything from shorting when it turned. It then had to be touched up. It runes great now. below is a pic of it.

MIKE

PS. You shouldn’t have posted this topic. I can’t get that other Coal burner out of my mind. If I bid on it it’s your fault my friend. [;)]

Interesting prototype - the description of “coal turbine” threw me so I did a quick google search. Toward the end of this Wikipedia article is a description. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Pacific_GTELs

I gotta say, the idea of pulverizing coal and burning it in a turbine would never have occurred to me! Sand in a jet or helicopter engine is pretty bad - cinders and ash obviously wasn’t any better.

Beautiful locomotive, too bad it’s only about $3000 over my budget right now[:D]. (My entire fleet’s not worth that much!!!). Anyone that can afford one of those is lucky…

You have the correct answer to how it ran and why it as junked before the tests were complete.

The coal turbine is a nice model but as a Union Pacific fan and collector of Overland and other UP brass, that is the last model I would want. It is in the early sixties era and only ran a few trips before it was scrapped. I model the forties and fities so it is not really in my modeling era anyway.

When one of the design engineers working on the project was asked what it sounded like when it was running, he replied this. It sounds just like a gas turbine except for the broken blades coming out the side of the unit.

The coal turbine broke the turbine blades so often I read it only made a few test trips and was side lined on each one. That all said, it is still a nice looking model.

Ending bid: $4550. Yeah, that would’ve put me in dept. Oh well, my largest curves are 22" radius anyway. Guess I’ll have to go with an Athearn turbine instead.[:D]

Just caught this thread. Woot, I picked one up a while back (way less than $4550). Waiting on the DCC package to go in along with sound. Heck, I don’t care if it ran for a day, that loco is one SWEEEEETTTTT looking thang.

Checked my Brown Book and OMI imported 100 of these in 1989 with a list price of $1,890.00 so this price is not to bad based on the rarity and inflation.

Why would somebody have two of these when the prototype only had one?

Regards

Rick

Why would someone have two?!?! Because there are 98 to go!! Well 97 as I’m never selling mine. :stuck_out_tongue:
