8602 lionel help please

First, I just joined the forum today. Neat place you have here.

I got my childhood lionel 8602 out today and am trying to get it going again. I cleaned the drive wheels and center thingies. I wiped down the track. I have it going round and round again! It has not worked for years!

My question is: it is throwing sparks that I do not remember from all those years ago. Is this normal? Seems dangerous to me.

You may want to try the Classic Toy Trains or the Model Railroader forum. This forum mostly deals with Classic Trains. Hopefully someone can answer your question.
