87 times...?

Ho scale is roughly 1/87th the prototype so if you’re viewing a model from 3 feet away is that the same as viewing a real machine at 87 times 3 feet, or 261 feet? Am I thinking correctly?
Jarrell

Jarrell… You may be thinking too much! [;)]

How’s the layout coming along? Do you have any updated pics?
We “finished” our 8x8 last month. Pics are at http://www.railimages.com/gallery/peterjung . Getting ready to start up a 22x7 sized layout over the next few months - still in planning stage right now, and prepping the physical area.

It would be if you get your pupils a scale 5’ 8" off the ground (0.781"). [;)]

I’m 5’9" tall (or short…depending on perspective) that puts my eyes at ~5’5" off the ground. My layout is 38" high which means I look at my loco’s from 2’5" in the air…which in scale feel is 210’ 6". It’s like looking at my layout from a hot air balloon…LOL.

I didn’t really appreciate the size of my loco’s until I bought my first package of HO scale people. These bad boys (the loco’s not the people) are huge!

Jarrell, please post some progress pictures of your layout. It’s been a while since we’ve seen anything. And I for one, am keenly interested in your progress, especially as it parallels mine in so many ways.

Best regards,
Trevor

Ok gang! Why do we need to no this?[%-)][%-)]

Pete, the layout isn’t moving ahead very fast, I’m still roughing in the trackplan but I think I’m almost there. Lately I’ve been building a structure or two and last night I started trying to upgrade my rolling stock to Kadee couplers, metal wheels etc. I gotta get off my duff though and get focused… [:D]
Yeah, like that’s gonna happen.
Jarrell

Huh? [%-)]

Hmmmm… I’ve always wanted to be taller! That’s why I like scale trains!?!

Trevor, it’s sad that I’m not making a whole lot of progress as I’ve had the trackplan in one area kinda holding me up (as in can’t decide which way I want to do it) but hopefully I’ll get that resolved soon.
Jarrell

Ya got me, Jim. Curiosity? I dunno.
Jarrell

We sort of did the same thing last winter. We got to a point on the layout and sort of stopped “construction”, and spent the cold winter nights building up structures and upgrading our rolling stock. It was worth every penny we put into metal wheelsets and Kadee couplers, as our rolling stock is now very reliable.

Excellent question, this was discussed a while back, it all boils down to scale, like handrails on model diesels(usually too large) at a certain distance from the engine( in reality) they become hard to see, if at all, so if you are 15 feet from a model and see large glaring handrails they may be out of scale. So if everything on a model is to scale, the distance you view it is irrelevant, except you still don’t know how far you are (in scale) away from the model----- I’m getting too confused here, are you???

One reason to know is so you can take pictures of real life and use them as backdrop material. There was a long artical a few decades ago in MRR on how to do this. When I get there I plan to try some. The problem of perspective does come into play if you use the photos very far behind the scenes.

Jarrell, this is why I hate the **** outta this forum sometimes. All this crap and your question hasn’t been answered yet. At least not directly. YES, you have it right.
