Thes are actually 96 foot whale belly tank cars. Only two I beleive were actually built. None sold to compamies. Atlas made them in N scale in the 60"s see the following URl. for detalis:

I recently got hold of an Atlas N scale one. I’m waiting for it to come in the mail. And I got it at a price lower than the $40 + you see on eBay.[;)]

Well, just got my Atlas whale belly today.
It isn’t a bad model at all. Details could be added. At some times, the handrails on the ends will rub up against the body of the tanker. It’s awfully light for its size in my opinion, and may not track well over everything. I can only test it on curves and straights…It looks really funny going around 12" radii curves, but I don’t care. I’m sure the brass model would be much better, but these are satisfying as well, and would look great after weathering.
I went out to the museum and when I saw that it about floored me. Very impressive up close. I lived in Swansea when I was stationed at Scott AFB. The St Louis metro area has some of the best railfanning anywhere.

For those of you,who can’t or won’t spend,big bucks on a brass whale belly tank car. Quality craft models,long out of business,made an HO scale model of this same car. I have one in my collection,very easy to build,but not for beginners.You can find them on E-bay from time to time.

I added weight in the bottom of the whale belly. It tracks a lot better. Car will take 71/2 in curves due to articulated trucks, but look a lot better on wider radius curves.
