I am trying to remove ( for the first time) a 9-pin plug from an Athearn locomotive so I can plug in a decoder; I can not easily remove either 9 pin plug - from the loco, or from the decoder. Is there a trick to this? does anyone have any suggestions so I do not break anything? I tried to grip and pull the two pieces apart, but it seems they are not interested in coming apart…
You may have to use a small flat-bladed screwdriver to get it started, they usually lock together pretty tightly. Some sound decoders have the covering plastic wrap going over the connection to the 9-pin plug so you sometimes have to take a hobby knife or single-edge razor blade to trim a little of the covering away to separate them out.
You have to grasp firmly and rock it from side to side. The Athearns I have done almost seem like they were glued. They do come apart. A small screw driver to pry it and just right before something breaks they separate.
