How many times can you use 91% alcohol to strip paint before it becomes useless??? If I get a product made specifically for paint stripping could I use it as many times as I like??
Thanks,
Smoke

Interesting question. I don’t know, but it is so cheap does it really matter? I mean I picked up a bunch at Walgreens the other day for $0.99 a bottle.
That would depend on the product and the manufactures directions.
Scalecoat paint remover. I’ve stripped 12 Athearn heavy weight passenger cars and it still has more use left in it. Although its very dirty now…
Well, why don’t you do a non-scientific, informal test, and let us know?

alchohol evaporates. And it’s also a mild solvent. That means it dissolves what it comes in contact with. After a while it will be no good. To prolong the life of it, minimize air exposure.
There are many kinds of paint cleaners and strippers. Some will last longer, but are more hazardous to your health. So it’s a trade off. They make very good brush cleaner made from citric acid (oranges) that removes paint well off brushes. But I have yet to try it on a loco.
I have used my 91% alcohol many times. As stated above it does evaporate, but aslong as there is alcohol it is good. You do get the removed paint on the bootm of the jar. I will occasionally pour the alcohol into my other jar through a coffee filter to collect the solids and wash the old jar out to get any remaining solids from the bottom. I do dry the jar to prevent diluting the alochol with water. Keeping the jar tighly sealed helps to keep the alcohol from evaporating.
The stuff I have been using now has worked for 5 times. My lasest victom a Athearn C44-9W. Didn’t know they put the paint on so thick.
