It is about time the FRa moved from the Steam age to the computer age and while most shortlines cannot take atvantage to the new rule it will help all of us with new locomotives.
I why did it take a federal mandate to have the railroads put locks on the doors of it’s locomotives? Not saying where, when or what railroad but, Once two coal trains were found to be unattended, idling and unlocked. Someone could have tried to play engineer for a day.
Cheaper, most likely, to equip crews with firearms.
These are two sensible moves by the FRA, addressing greater crew safety and maintenance expenses. About the second, it’s good when regulatory oversight keeps pace with advancing technology.

It’s about time they put locks on our cabs. As for equiping crews with firearms, many of us are former law enforcement and I for one would NOT like to see many of my “Crazy” co-workers armed! Talk about going “Postal” haha
Too bad they didn’t address the length of the 92 day inspection for museum equipment that only runs 2 or 3 days a week.
