OK. What is a “B Boat”? I know what a “U Boat” is (both the naval and GE kinds).

I’m guessing U??B’s

Cool video Ted, Gotta love the hotshots. I got a cab ride up the hill a couple of years ago on a UP hotshot. They stopped to let us (I was with my dad) off just on the other side of the overpass behind where your video started. When that train took off it really took off. By the time the rear end passed us the train was already doing at least 60.

I’ve heard C-boat before. First time for B-boat, but most GE power near me was six axle for a long time.
GE dropped the Universal or U designation and replaced the first letter with a C for six axle or B for four axle. It was after this when C-boat (or B-boat) for GEs appeared. I never thought the terms caught on, but that could be a regional thing too.

Wow, almost 70 mph and pulling away from your car…way cool. Please send us more of these videos. Thanks.

yeah very nice vid. paced a soo train like that through davenport iowa a long time ago, blowing throught alot of crossings.

B boat or baby boat, "B"40-8 there, but ive heard it use, and used myself even for older GEs too. U18B, U23B, B32-7 and so on. we even still use the Uboat phrase for the newer stuff too

Good stuff where was that? I paced a WBer between Needles & Daggett & I was doing 80 on I10 but he was going faster until he hit a caution lite. I have it on VHS. On my next trip I intend to take dig camcorder & post it on my site. Were you driving & taping or you have a companion? [:o)]

Never seen this stuff from that view…different. Those 4 axle turds beat your kidneys out at 70.

Wow, that’s nice, 3 warbonnets, and look at that smoke!!! How fast were they going at the end? 70MPH? 80? A billion?

This was just east of the summit at Tehachapi.

Well, I WAS sitting in the driver seat, but a friend with me was steering and watching the road.

I love hotshots! Just sorry I wasn’t around to video the BSM on the SP out in the desert somewhere doin’ about 70+ …

It’s kind of hard to railfan the Needles sub on interstate 10.

Well even though the BSM is history you can still catch em flying along at 75 out in the desert. I like chaseing along the Salton Sea where the road and tracks are close together and the curves are still superelevated.[8D]

Chad , been there a couple of times but it seems like the UP is always using the Sunset Route for a long parking lot!

Mabee I have just been lucky but I’ve been out that way a few times this summer and was not dissapointed. I might even get out there this weekend as I’ve got to make a work related trip in that direction.

Well in the video the units are ATSF B40-8W’s, so by “B Boat” he means B40-8.[;)]

That was an awesome clip! Have anymore like that?[:D]

Maybe I should have said I40 not 10. Being a E/coast guy lost in the desert 10 & 40 are sort of comparable. It was the I between Needles & Barstow if I were to mapquest it probably it is 40 not 10 as I said. [:o)][:o)]

Yes Needles/Daggett I should have posted I40 not I10. I10 was the one I used to go to Marana AZ to see the UPRR bullet train[:o)]

Hi Ted,
I had bussiness out that way yesterday so I decided to do some railfanning. I hooked up with the Sunset at Thousand Palms and as I gassed up an eastbound blew through. So I followed it. He hit every siding for meets,2 at the east end double track at Indio(Coachilla) and then one each at Thermal, Mecca, Mortmar, Ferrum and Bertram. Then I decided the crew was probably getting tired of seeing me at every siding so I followed the westman. That train had priority and didn’t stop. It was 70-75 all the way back to Indio. Every siding was full on the trip back. When we hit Indio there were a couple trains waiting to go west on the single track. Everything was quite fluid. Despite the rumors, I assure you the Sunset is no parking lot. I saw 14 trains in 3 hours and not a one was parked. I’m always impressed by how many trains that single track line can handle fluidly.
