A couple of weeks of ago I was contacted about a possible position in Rhode Island. While it is not 100 percent etched in stone - it is close enough that it looks like I will be moving there by year’s end. After living in basementless areas for 20 years I’ll be finally going to a place where it seems that 99 percent of the houses have 'em. The wife already has said that houses without one are not to be considered - way cool!
I have nearly all my train things packed in a way that I think will be most convient for storing my stuff while allowing easy access for what I need. Looking forward to starting the new layout!!
So, I assume we’ll see you at the Big E show in Springfield, Mass January 27 & 28.
Excellent news. Rhode Island is a pretty nice place. Thanks to a couple of deep bays, they’ve got quite a long shoreline, and the water is warmed by the Gulf Stream. But if you want subways, you’ll have to go to Boston or New York.
Rhode Island’s a great place, be sure to check out Port Judith and Narraganset, nice beaches and good food, good luck. P.S., you’ll be in old New Haven country, now don’t get hooked…
Congrats on the move! Trains Trains Trains[^] You wil also have a yard as the lots are typically a lot bigger then Texas ones. Hope it all works out for ya. You might find the accent a little weird but… lol You may want to take your wife out for a nice dinner in Newport for being nice and giving her support for your trains! Tim
Most homes in the western and southwestern United States lack basements. I am pretty fortunate to have obtained one only recently (albeit it is a ground floor basement, the floor of the house is 7’ off the ground) and I am discovering the joys of basement ownership–although I haven’t actually gotten the layout up and running yet.Congratulations on your imminent subterranean domain!
Dave, that is great news. Here are the postives for you: 1. No more 10 months of heat and humidity. 2. You “may” have a chance for White Christmas. 3. Nice big basement to build the layout of your dreams. Do it quick before it gets cluttered. 4. Skiing is just a short drive north in Winter. 5. Ocean Temps in Summer hit 70-74 on the RI coast. 6. Beautiful Fall colors. 7. Mountains are just a 3hour ride North for hunting, camping, fishing, hiking. 8. Plenty of LHS not too far to drive to. 9. No fire ants On the negative side: 1. House prices around Newport are relatively high, cheaper to the north though. 2. You “will” have snow to shovel. 3. It will NOT be 80F in Jan. Or Feb either. I think you will love the area.
One thing I would add–make sure your basement is tested, or has been recently for radon. Levels are universally high here in Ohio, and most basements need to be mitigated to ventilate the radon out. Might have lower levels in Rhode Island, but I’d still recc. checking the levels; it’s relatively inexpensive.
