How about a WESTERN & ATLANTIC DIESEL LOCOMOTIVE painted in the same colors as the GENERAL STEAM LOCOMOTIVE on display in KENNESAW, GEORGIA. The W&A is leased to CSX by the state of Georgia.
ACL definately, that purple paint scheme was classic. Also the B&O “Royal Blue” livery. We’d have to include the C&O paint scheme, and the old Western Maryland was very dramatic indeed.
I can’t see it happening anytime soon, but it’s fun to speculate. And looking at how the NS “Heritage” paint jobs turned out I’m amazed at how well paint schemes from the 40’s work so well on modern diesel units. The designers back then really knew their stuff, didn’t they?
For CSX to do something like this, they would need to do it in such a way to go above and beyond NS.
UP did their heritage engines.
Then Amtrak did heritage engines - going one step further and using the old paint schemes.
Then NS did the old paint schemes - but went a step further and did 20 of them. And they had a giant public gathering. To be fair - Amtrak had a small gathering of theirs at WUS, but it wasn’t as newsworthy.
So now - what can CSX do to top that, and not look like a pale imitator?
CSX could do the same as NS, and just use as many passenger paint schemes as possible, since they were likely more flashy than any of the freight schemes. Then they could have the engines perform as many office car specials as possible until they are pulled for freight service.
They may also consider using engines other than the ES44AC and SD70ACe, and use some AC6000CW units, as Lionel did when making some “what-if” units for their product line.
If CSX decides to repaint some of the AC6000CW locomotives then why wouldn’t it just repaint a pair of former Conrail SD80MACs in their original baby blue Conrail paint schemes?
How does CSX top NS? Just like this: after painting the units in the “Heritage” schemes they run a locomotive cavalcade, say from Fredericksburg to Richmond on the old RF&P (I forgot THAT paint scheme, it was classic!) terminating at the Science Museum of Virginia (the old RF&P station on West Broad Street) WITH Ross Rowlands 4-8-4 #614 in the lead. Now THAT would get people’s attention!
I was wondering about that. I figured that they might have some kind of office car set of cab units, but can’t remember what they are exactly. Aren’t they F or E units?
Ordinarily I’d be in 100% agreement with you, but not concerning CSX. The whole corporate attitude now is it’s a business, not a playground or entertainment medium for railfans, or the general public for that matter. Hey, it’s their 'road, it’s their call, I can live with it.
