A brand new diesel arrived today!!

OK, I finally sprung for a new diesel. Arrived today… Opened the box, pulled out the “instructions”, read same, set it on the track and listened to the noise (called “sound”). Not really impressed. Athearn SD-45-2, RTR, Sound and DCC. Looks great! I guess my problem is that thru my hearing aids, the “sound” frequency range just sounds like noise… I still have hope that a tusanmi (sp?) in my Bachman Nickle Plate Berk will sound somewhat better…

Since the loco is RTR, I was amazed at the packages of “parts” included… some parts are identifiable (crew seats…) but others are just chunks of grey plastic. My past experience with Athearn over the years has been good. This loco just has bags of parts with NO explanation of where they go… I would have thought a few directions would have been included… Perhaps an article on what to do with the parts in an Athearn RTR box would be inorder…

Is it just me???

Hockingvalle,

Forgive my ignoreance but: SD45-2 RTR? Or is it actually a Genesis unit?

I have a Genesis SD45-2 that I received as a birthday present last year. Beautifully detailed and a smooth runner. It has a custom installed Lok Sound decoder and speaker. Sound quality is excellent.

This has been debated at length on forums, but a good number of modelers are not too crazy about the MRC sound systems in most of Athearn’s Genesis diesels. Will cost you more of course, but you can later intall another dcc/sound system in your unit.
