While going over some of my old issues of MR, I stumbled upon an interesting “how to” project for building a coal loader. The article, written by Richard Knapp, has a complete step by step of how to build a great looking coal conveyor and tipple. I found the project well written and easy to follow. best of all, full size HO templates and a bill of materials are included. For those of you interested in building your own, You’ll need a copy of the Feb 1983 issue of MR. The project is found starting on page 95. If you do not have this issue, you can order one from MR or try looking it up in the MR archives.
Here is a photo of the cover and article:

Here are some shots showing how my version came out. I’m planning to install it next to my coal mine.

Wow that looks great! and I may have a place to put a loader like that.

How is this supposed to work (in real life)? Is it meant to fill hoppers or convey what comes out of the hopper chutes, or both?
I’m looking for something that could go with a coal trestle to move the coal (or gravel or sand) from under a hopper to a boiler or furnace.
Thanks,

Bob, don’t tell me, yours operates prototypically as well?

The way it works in real life is as follows:
Trucks bring in the raw coal from a nearby mine. They dump their load into the receiving bin. From their, the coal is fed into the feeder conveyo and then breaker box. The breaker box crushes the coal into smaller (useable) size. After crushing, it is fed up the main conveyor and onto an awaiting hopper for transport.
The model was based on prototype coal loaders found throughout the Appalachia region.
looks kool im might try it when i find the time
