A couple of Burlington F3's weathered

Heres a recent weathering project I did to dirty up a couple of Burlington F3A’s. They were too clean by far. I still haven’t found the box with the couplers in.[:(!]

Jon

It’s always a treat to see your work, Jon. Thank you for sharing with us.

Tom

Nice looking loco’s. Good work. Tks for sharing.

Nice one John. As always it is nice to see the Q especially alive and well in the “old country”. These look like the P1K locos and if you have lost the couplers that came with it don’t fret, they were not worth keeping. I put KD #5’s in.

Jon,

great job on the weathering[tup]. The grill details come out nice. What diaphrams did you use? Who made the F3’s?

Russell

If one wants to preserve the close coupling, KD450’s (Stewart), #23’s (Genesis), or #43’s (other).

JON: I’m intrigued with the work on the Grills. What shells did you use?

I just compared them to my Proto 1K’s and they look like the standard P1K shell. The weathering really enhances the grills.

Thanks guys.

They are indeed the Proto 1000, with moulded on handrails still intact.

The diaphrams are ‘American Limited’ Streamline passenger cars #9000 - not exactly correct, but sumthin’ is better than nuthin’. I also used the KD #450 close coupling to get the 10.5 spacing between units.

They are permanently coupled for now, with only one motor unit. I stripped the motor out of the other to accommodate the decoder and speaker, the wires passing through the diaphram.

Jon

Jon, love those F3’s and your weathering job [^]. Here’s a pic of mine fresh out of the box a few weeks ago. Haven’t even had the time to put them on the rails.

These are Athearn Genesis incarnations.

Where can I find reasonably priced F3A’ s with build tin MARS light? I am modeling the MONON, America’s first fully dieselized railroad, and all their F3’s had MARS lights but all I can find at Walthers and elsewhere do not have theis vital feature. Anyone know how to add this feature?

Welcome to the forum Hockingham. Stewart Hobbies (now part of Bowser) have an extensive range of F3 locos. http://www.stewarthobbies.com/Catalog.htm#F3 Some of them like the CB&Q paint schemes have the dual headlight arrangement. They have undec versions of these as well in A/B sets. I hope this helps. I have a pair of these Stewarts and they run very smoothly. Many DCC decoders support Mars light effects so it would not be hard to implement the mars light on these models in DCC.
