Since my first trip to the Columbia River Gorge back in October 2008, I wanted to take a night photo of the curve at Home Valley, Washington. The thought occurred to me back in 2008, but I didn’t have the opportunity to try it, and in 2009, the expedition of foamers that I was traveling with (Lead by fellow RP contributor and friend, Robert Scott) didn’t spend a lot of time in the gorge due to poor weather. However, this year was a different story, The clouds and rain held out for a few days and due to some convenient astrological timing, the moon was out in full force, adding some nice depth to the image.
Wow !!! [bow] That’s more art than a railroad photo - really, there’s not a train in view (just a streak of light on the far side of the river), and lighted entirely by the train that went by. It was worth the wait - shows the benefits of planning and waiting for everything to correlate and come together.
What would you think about using a flash to illuminate and ‘add in’ the train as it passes in the foreground ?
How long of an exposure did you use ? Multiple exposures ?
Very few pics thrown up on the web are worth looking at; usually they’re ego shots using a long lens of a head on cab or another ho-hum roster shot. Something made me open this one and I’m glad I did. It is almost surreal: ghosts, shadows and lights telling so much about the place and time. It is certainly the, not one of, but the, most creative of rail shots I have ever seen and am glad you’ve shared it with us here!!!
Yep, ditto on the above post–it seems they moved the original post, and I’m not going to search through over 300K pics on railpictures.net to find it…need a linky please!
…Well, that’s a letdown. The way posters have been expressing how great this night shot really was, {and night shots are one of my favorites}, I am like others…Did not find it.
